Ian Butler claimed six Pakistan wickets to put New Zealand in a strong position on day three of the second Test.
The fast bowler took his last five wickets for just 12 runs as Pakistan folded to be all out for 196.
Although New Zealand lost three wickets before the close of play, they still held a formidable 245-run lead.
Lou Vincent, Stephen Fleming and Test debutant Richard Jones were all dismissed with Mark Richardson remaining unbeaten on 35.
Butler worked hard early on, shattering Abdul Razzaq's stumps to have Pakistan at six for 171 at one stage.
As Moin Khan desperately tried to keep the innings going at one end, Butler put Mohammad Sami back in the pavillion with the score at 194 and Shoaib Akhtar was bowled one run later.
Then with the addition of only one more run he had Khan caught by Vettori for 19 and Danish Kaneria out leg before without scoring.
Earlier, Jacob Oram, who scored a Test-best 97, featured in the first two wickets to fall.
First he caught Taufeeq Umar in the gully off the bowling of Daryl Tuffey and then trapping Inzamam-ul-Haq lbw to finish with figures of two for 49 off 22 overs.
Yousuf Youhana, who struggled early in his innings, lasted 246 minutes for 60 runs before being caught by Stephen Fleming to give Daniel Vettori his first wicket.
But New Zealand opener Lou Vincent again departed early, trapped lbw by Shoaib Akhtar who also had Jones caught behind for seven just before stumps.
Inbetween dismissals skipper Fleming fell to off-spinner Kaneria for 24.
However, New Zealand may still struggle to get a result with rain forecast over the final two days.
