One-day international, Auckland: New Zealand 230-6 (49.1 overs) beat Pakistan 229-7 (50 overs) by four wickets Styris is congratulated by team-mate Craig McMillan |
Scott Styris shone with bat and ball as New Zealand won the first of five one-day internationals against Pakistan by four wickets in Auckland. He took 3-34 to help restrict Pakistan to 229-7 in their 50 overs and then hit an unbeaten 101 as the Kiwis reached their target with five balls to spare.
Moin Khan made an unbeaten 72 off 68 balls in Pakistan's innings.
But their attack was weakened by the absence of Shoaib Akhtar (groin strain) as Styris saw New Zealand to 230-6.
The home side went into the game looking for revenge after suffering a recent 5-0 whitewash in Pakistan - a series which four players, including Styris, chose to miss because of saftey concerns.
Skipper Stephen Fleming put Pakistan in after winning the toss and his decision paid off as his bowlers reduced them to 120-6.
Jacob Oram bowled superbly for figures of 2-28 from his 10 overs and Styris weighed in with the wickets of Salim Elahi (20), Shoaib Malik (four) and Inzamam-ul-Haq (19).
But Moin and Abdul Razzaq halted the slide by adding 63 for the seventh wicket before Razzaq was run out for 22.
Moin struck a six and eight fours and Azhar Mahmood raced to 26 from 10 balls as they gave the innings a final flourish with a stand of 46 in three overs.

New Zealand made a poor start in reply as Craig Cumming was run out in the second over for one and Hamish Marshall (14) fell to Shabbir Ahmed.
A partnership of 67 between Fleming and Styris put them back on an even keel, but the game tilted back towards Pakistan once Fleming had top edged a pull and been caught by Mohammad Sami off Mahmood for 45.
The dismissal of Craig McMillan (12) by Shoaib Malik led to three wickets going down for 15 runs, leaving Styris and Brendon McCullum to score 74 from the last 10 overs.
Styris monopolised the strike superbly, with McCullum facing only 23 balls for his 13 not out, and reached a deserved century off 107 balls.
Only two runs were needed at the start of the final over and McCullum glanced Sami's first ball down to fine leg to wrap up the victory.
