Second Test, Wellington, day two: New Zealand 366 v Pakistan 52-2 (at close)
 Jacob Oram made a determined 97 |
Determined batting and two early wickets gave New Zealand the edge over Pakistan in the second Test.
Jacob Oram (97) and Mark Richardson (82) helped the Kiwis reach 366 after resuming the second day on 151-5.
Daniel Vettori made 44 as the Black Caps' final four wickets added 195 runs, with Shoaib Akhtar taking 5-48.
Oram and Ian Butler then claimed a wicket each to leave the tourists 52-2 at the close of play.
Oram had Imran Farhat caught behind for 20 and Butler removed Yasir Hameed to have Pakistan 30-2 before Taufeeq Umar and Yousuf Youhana saw them safely through to stumps.
Earlier, Oram deserved his maiden Test century after a sparkling innings off just 158 balls, but lazily guided a ball from Shabbir Ahmed to wicket-keeper Moin Khan when three runs short of the milestone.
Reflecting on the disappointment, he said: "I sort of looked at the bigger picture and realised that a couple of partnerships I was involved in helped us get to a bit of a dream total last night."
He shared in two value stands of 76 with Richardson and 80 with Vettori to wrest the initaitve back from the tourists.
The added only 16 runs in the opening session before losing wicket-keeper Robbie Hart for 19.
Hart was caught in a leg-side trap by Imran Farhat off Akhtar when New Zealand was 171.
Richardson, who had stood tall while wickets fell on the first day, finally went to Ahmed after facing 286 deliveries in a 439-minute vigil at the crease.
Oram displayed more attacking instincts to hit 12 fours and a six in his stay and found another ally in Vettori after Richardson's departure.
Pakistan's cause as not helped by three dropped catches in the afternoon session and Inzamam's reluctance to call on Akhtar.
