New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has overcome an abdominal strain to return for this week's first Test against Pakistan in Hamilton. Fleming missed the recent one-day series in Pakistan, which the Black Caps lost 5-0 because of the injury, which he suffered on tour in India.
But he was passed fit after playing in a domestic match this weekend.
"We are optimistic that he will be ready to captain the side on Friday," said coach John Bracewell.
"And we will do everything that we can to ensure that happens."
Bracewell confirmed Chris Cairns will captain the side if Fleming fails to report fit.
The all-rounder, who led the team in Pakistan, has not played in a Test match for two years because of long-term knee trouble.
The selectors have named 13 players, including two spinners, left-armer Daniel Vettori and off-spinner Paul Wiseman.
Fast bowler Shane Bond, with a back injury and all-rounder Nathan Astle, who has a knee problem, have already been ruled out of the Test series.
Pakistan, who began a three-day match against Auckland on Saturday are to play two Tests and five one-day internationals in New Zealand.
New Zealand: Stephen Fleming (captain), Ian Butler, Chris Cairns, Robbie Hart, Richard Jones, Craig McMillan, Jacob Oram, Mark Richardson, Scott Styris, Daryl Tuffey, Daniel Vettori, Lou Vincent, Paul Wiseman.
