| Monday, 29 July, 2002, 12:22 GMT 13:22 UK Bangladesh in deep trouble ![]() Chairtha Buddika has had a good day with bat and ball Second Test, Colombo (stumps): Sri Lanka 373 & 25-0; Bangladesh 164 After beginning the day on level terms with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh are now in deep trouble. Sanath Jayasuriya declined to enforce the follow-on, perhaps aware of the need to give some of his inexperienced batsmen more practice. But this Test looks likely to be another defeat for Bangladesh, whose batting effort was feeble, other than two gutsy performances from debutants Alok Kapali and Tapash Baisya. Sri Lanka began the day on 301 for eight. That soon became 309 for nine once Talha Jubair had Sujeewa de Silva caught behind for five, but the tourists struggled from then on.
Debutant Chamila Gamage, batting at number 11, smashed 40 of 46 balls to put on 64 for the last wicket with Charitha Buddika, who finished on 29 not out. That seemed to demoralise Bangladesh, who got to 20 without loss before folding to 51 for five. At that point Kapali, who had also taken two wickets, came in and batted sensibly, putting away the bad ball but not playing with undue risk. At 86 for seven, Tapash came in to provide him with some support, and together they put on 37 for the eighth wicket before Kapali was lbw to Sanath Jayasuriya. A peculiar stand of 40 follows for the ninth wicket, with Manjural Islam scoring nought off 41 balls before Jayasuriya also snaffled him. And the Sri Lankan captain - who finished with three for 17 - was on hand to have Jubair caught sor a duck off Upul Chandana to wrap up the innings. Tapash was left high and dry on 52 not out.
