| Saturday, 15 June, 2002, 11:43 GMT 12:43 UK Pakistan level series Australia struggled indoors at Colonial Stadium Second one-day international, Melbourne: Pakistan 168-8 (48.5 overs) beat Australia 167 all out (45.4 overs) by two wickets Pakistan skittled out Australia for just 167 in the second one-day international in Melbourne after Wasim Akram claimed two wickets in the first over of the innings. But the tourists were made to fight for a two-wicket victory, limping home with just seven balls remaining indoors at Colonial Stadium. Akram's run out for 10 after a close call by the video umpire left the visiting side at 150 for eight in the 44th over.
The Australian veteran conceded just 16 runs from nine overs at the indoor stadium. Both Brett Lee and Shane Warne were expensive but took two wickets each, Lee's brace coming in the eighth over. And there was a wicket in Pakistan's first innings, too, Saeed Anwar run out without having faced a ball. Early onslaught Australian captain Ricky Ponting must have rued his decision to bat first - he fell for 0, caught and bowled off the second ball he faced. Akram had already had dangerman Adam Gilchrist caught behind also without scoring from the innings' first delivery.
Michael Bevan then came in at number six, hitting 30 from 52 balls to give the host's score a little more respectability. Martyn, who had two lucky escapes with mis-hit pull shots before he reached double figures, gave a final chance to point off Shahid Afridi for 56. Leg-spinner Afridi finished with three for 28, trapping tailenders Shane Watson and Warne lbw as Australia slumped. Shoaib Akhtar, back from a hip injury, struck twice in the 45th over, getting through Andy Bichel's defences before having Bevan caught behind four balls later. The series is now tied at 1-1 with the third match to be played in Brisbane on Wednesday. Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Jimmy Maher, Adam Gilchrist, Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann, Michael Bevan, Shane Watson, Shane Warne, Andrew Bichel, Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie (12th man).
