Against a Queensland Invitational XI that had given Pakistan a scare on their way to a 15-run victory on Saturday, the national side easily secured a 72-run win in the 40-over match. In the absence of habitual one-day opener Adam Gilchrist, missing because of family commitments, Hayden and Maher put on an opening stand of 85 from just 73 balls. Hayden's 78 from 97 deliveries was tame by comparison to his fellow-opener, who has shone since his return to the national side in South Africa earlier this year.
A mini-collapse, saw Maher, captain Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn and Darren Lehmann all dismissed in the space of 12 runs. But Hayden and Michael Bevan put on an 87-run partnership, with the one-day specialist providing just 17 runs. Nathan Hauritz, left out by Australia after making his debut in South Africa, produced his second stand-out performance with the ball in as many days. The Queensland off-spinner finished with one for 17 off eight overs. Bowling success But Australia's current spin incumbent, Shane Warne, also starred, conceding just 19 runs from his eight overs, and capturing two wickets. Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee also took braces as Queensland were retricted to 154 for eight, stand-in wicket-keeper Chris Hartley top-scoring with 34. As on Saturday, the match, at Allan Border Field, took a relaxed approach to team selection. Glove-man Wade Seccombe switched sides to cover for Gilchrist's absence. And all-rounder Shane Watson turned out for the state of his birth, having moved to Tasmania a year ago to make his mark in the first-class game. Australia open the three-match series against Pakistan at Colonial Stadium in Melbourne on Wednesday. The second match will be played at the same venue on Saturday with the third game at the Gabba in Brisbane on June 19. Australia (40 overs maximum) |
