England's Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms started their Commonwealth Games mixed doubles campaign with victory over Choony Hann Wong and Stock Ai Ooi. Wales' Kelly Morgan will face England's Tracey Hallam after beating Northern Ireland's Lisa Lynas.
But Morgan and Richard Vaughan are out of the mixed doubles after losing to England's Simon Archer and Ella Tripp.
England's Aamir Ghaffar won his opening men's singles match but Wales' Jonathan Morgan lost to India's Anup Sridhar.
For Robertson and Emms, victory represented a degree of revenge for England's unexpected defeat to Malaysia in the team event in Melbourne.
The Olympic silver medallists moved into the third round with a 21-16 21-11 victory.
"It's just good to get that first round out of the way," said Robertson.
"I think they benefited more from playing us in the team event than we did.
"Malaysia are always strong and we had to pay them respect."
Vaughan feels that he and Morgan should have done better in their game.
"That was a game we could have and should have won," said the Llanbradach man.
"The standard of the players in the group were pretty equal.
"But Kelly and I haven't played a competitive match together before so we need to get more tournaments under our belts.
"Now that we're both back after a long period out this is something we can build on in the future."
