Cawthorn comes away from Germany with a healthy medal collection

GB kayaker Rachel Cawthorn secured her second gold and third medal in total at the World Cup event in Germany by winning the women's K1 500m on Sunday.

The 21-year-old, who won bronze in the 200m on Friday and gold in Saturday's 1,000m, produced a superb finish to clinch victory in Duisburg.

She said: "There were some big names in the 500m, some of whom had not competed on Saturday, but I felt confident."

Britons Jessica Walker and Louisa Sawers were fourth in the K2 500m.

Olympic champion Tim Brabants, back in full-time training since giving up his medical career in February, was eighth in the men's K1 500m.

This followed up an impressive fourth spot in his favourite distance the 1,000m on Saturday.

Only last weekend 33-year-old Brabants made a remarkable comeback to the sport and achieved seventh place in the Men's K1.

Cawthorn was up against Olympic champions Katrin Wagner-Augustin from Germany and Italy's Josefa Idem on Sunday but kept her nerve to cap a memorable weekend.

She added: "I felt a bit tired after Friday and Saturday's racing, but I achieved personal bests after a heavy week of training, so this was no different really. I knew I could do it here.

"My coach [Miklos Simon] said that I should have saved a bit in Saturday's 1000m race, after winning by such a margin, but I couldn't resist speeding to the finish."

Cawthorn began her sporting career as a swimmer, before being talent-spotted for kayaking.

After coming fourth in the world last year, she will now set her sights on the European Championships from 2-4 July and then the World Championships in August.
