Great Britain's kayakers win two gold medals in Hungary

Great Britain's kayakers won two gold medals on the final day of the World Cup in Szeged, Hungary.

Liam Heath won his first World Cup event, with Jonathan Schofield in the men's kayak double 200m, and said "This is the first step to greater things."

Ed McKeever stormed to victory in the men's K1 (kayak single) 200m - a new distance for the 2012 London Olympics.

On Saturday, Tim Brabants finished seventh in his first major final since taking two Olympic medals in Beijing.

The 33-year-old clocked 3:32.630 seconds in the Men's K1 (kayak single) 1000m race won by Aleh Yurenia of Belarus.

Brabants left the sport to focus on his medical career after winning gold over 1000m and bronze in the 500m event in Beijing.

"It's a good result for Tim," said head canoe sprint coach Brendan Purcell.

"After only a few months of full time training, the aim was to make the final and he did just that, he achieved what he was hoping, which was to get back into racing and start to get race-fit again."

The 500m event has now been scrapped at Olympic level, to be replaced by the 200m event, in which Heath and Schofield, both 25, impressed.

Schofield said: "After a particularly awful season for me last year, this gold medal is absolutely fantastic."

In the women's C1 (canoe single), Britain's Lisa Suttle came sixth in a relatively new event, with Canada's Laurence Vincent-Lapointe claiming gold.
