Riddick Bowe last fought in 2005, beating Billy Zumbrun |
Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe will return to the ring on 13 December in Germany after an absence of over three years. The 41-year-old American will fight on the undercard of the Wladimir Klitschko-Hasim Rahman IBF title fight. Bowe retired in 1996 but returned in 2004 and only fought once more in 2005, before his latest absence. An opponent is yet to be found for Bowe who has only lost once in 43 fights, against Evander Holyfield in 1993. Holyfield himself returns to the ring on 20 December when he takes on Russia's WBA champion Nikolai Valuev in Zurich, Switzerland. Bowe's last fight was an unconvincing points victory over American Billy Zumbrun. The American's career is memorable for two notorious fights against Andrew Golota in 1996 that ended with the Polish heavyweight being disqualified in both. There was also a fine eighth-round knockout victory over Holyfield in 1995, avenging the defeat of two years earlier. After the fights with Golota, Bowe joined the Marine Corps but lasted less than a month and soon after he spent 17 months in prison for assault, before his return to the ring in 2004. He also won a silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, losing to former British heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, who himself is rumoured to be considering a comeback.
