Bowe hit by new charges

Former world heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe, who is set to begin an 18-month prison sentence for abducting his ex-wife, faces new assault charges against his current wife.

The 35-year-old faces four counts of second-degree assault in connection with an incident at his home in Fort Washington, Maryland.

He was released on $50,000 (32,000) bail pending an April court date.

Bowe's prison term, set to start on Friday, stems from a 1998 incident in which he abducted his then-wife Judy.

He pleaded in his trial that brain damage suffered in his boxing career contributed to his actions.

Bowe was also arrested in 2001 over an incident involving his current wife Terri. He was spared a custodial sentence after admitting to a harassment charge.

The boxer lost the 1988 Seoul Olympic super heavyweight final to Lennox Lewis, but in 1992 he became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world after beating Evander Holyfield.

But the reign was short-lived, as Bowe dumped the World Boxing Council belt in a dustbin in protest at having to fight Lewis again to keep it.

He also lost a 1993 rematch with Holyfield.

Bowe's career ended in 1996 after he twice defeated Andrew Golota.
