Norfolk boxer in Prizefighter bid

Sam Sexton
Sam Sexton has won seven of his eight pro fights to date

Norfolk heavyweight Sam Sexton is in line for a 25,000 pay-day if he can win three fights in one night.

The 24-year-old from Norwich will compete with seven other boxers for the title of 'Prizefighter' in September.

The tournament, in Newcastle, features quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final in one night with each fight lasting for three three-minute rounds.

The event is promoted by Barry Hearn and will take place on Friday 12 September.

Sexton has won seven of his eight professional fights so far but was stopped by Derek Chisora last time out in June.

When 'Prizefighter' was last on people were still talking about it two months later

Sam Sexton's trainer Graham Everett

His trainer Graham Everett told BBC Radio Norfolk Sexton had a good chance of taking the title. "It's a great opportunity for Sam and we're very confident," he said.

Its promoters are backing the 'Prizefighter' format to do for British boxing what Twenty20 has done for cricket, and Graham Everett agrees it could attract new fans to the sport.

"A lot of people watch boxing on a Friday evening but when Prizefighter was last on people were still talking about it two months later.

"Barry Hearn says himself that this has rekindled his interest in boxing; I don't think it will do the sport any harm at all."
