Thaxton backed to return to ring

Jon Thaxton could be in for a re-match with Lee Meager

Jon Thaxton's defeat to Yuri Romanov will not mark the end of his career, according to his trainer.

Graham Everett thinks Thaxton will fight on despite the 33-year-old losing his European Lightweight title shot in London on Friday night.

"He's still British Champion," said Everett. "I'm sure he'll box again."

The fight was stopped after five rounds at York Hall with Romanov well on top after the Norwich southpaw suffered a severe cut to his eye.

That is as bad a cut as we've seen. But these things happen. Heads just aren't meant to be punched, I suppose

Thaxton needs one more successful defence of his British lightweight crown to keep his Lonsdale belt and Everett thinks that will drive his man on.

"Everything now depends on that cut," said Everett. "But the one thing he does want is that Lonsdale belt outright and he's got to beat Lee Meager to get it."

Thaxton beat Meager in December 2006 in Dagenham to win the British title and a rematch is on the cards.

The Romanov defeat was not the first fight during which Thaxton has suffered severe cuts to his eye but trainer Everett was philosophical about the injuries.

"That's just one of those things. It's the eye which opened up against Lee Meager but it's a different cut.

"That is as bad a cut as we've seen. But these things happen.
