Harrison takes record in easy win
Scott Harrison
Harrison made quick work of Samuel Kebede
Scott Harrison broke Jim Watt's record for a Scottish boxer of five successful world title victories in farcical circumstances on Friday.

The WBO featherweight champion stopped Ethiopia's Samuel Kebede after just 57 seconds of the first round.

Harrison knocked the challenger down in the first few seconds and though the Swedish-based fighter was allowed to fight on, his legs failed him.

The Glasgow crowd greeted the quick finish to the fight with boos.

The 27-year-old later hit back at fans who voiced their displeasure at the early end to the encounter.

"What would you rather me have, a 12-round war or a one-round stoppage?" he said.

"He was 24 and unbeaten with 16 KOs and I knocked him out in one round. I've just made history in Scotland so what more do you want from me?

"I tell you, I'm feeling good about it. I'm up there with the best fighters in the world and I just proved it tonight.

"I caught him with a right hook on the temple and with the power I generated there was no way he was getting back up."

Harrison was quickly out of the blocks and Kebede was on the floor within seconds of the first bell after a couple of cuffs to the back of the head.

The Ethopian was given a standing count and already looked shaky.

Despite a brief flurry of retaliatory punches, he was floored again by nothing more than a decent blow from Harrison's left glove.

His legs buckled underneath him as he tried to rise and the referee stepped in, much to the crowd's disdain, to end the bout.

The British Boxing Board of Control has confirmed that it will be examining Kebede's credentials, but there are no plans to strip him of his purse.

Both Harrison and Frank Maloney, the Scot's manager, defended the match-up, stressing that Kebede's previous record of 24 fights undefeated proved Harrison's quality.

Kebede's camp added after the fight that they did not believe the bout should have been halted so quickly.
