European Athletics: Day five

Ashia Hansen celebrates winning gold at the European Championships
It was Hansen's second gold medal in 10 days

Britain's 110m hurdler Colin Jackson and triple jumper Ashia Hansen both won gold medals in Munich.

The veteran Welshman won his fourth consecutive European title to atone for the disappointment of only taking silver in last week's Commonwealth Games.

Hansen left it until the last jump before securing gold - just as she had done when winning at the Commonwealths.

Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan had to settle for her second silver medal of the championships when she was just edged out in the 5,000m by Spain's Marta Dominguez.

There were further titles decided in the women's marathon, heptathlon, the men's 3,000m steeplechase, the men's pole vault and the women's shot.

Women's 4x400m relay
Great Britain finish second in their heat to reach the final but finish well behind the Russian quartet.

Men's pole vault
An absorbing competition ends with Israel's Alex Averbukh taking gold with a clearance height of 5.85m.

German pair Lars Borgeling and Tim Lobinger delight the home crowd by filling the silver and bronze positions.

Women's shot put
Russia's Irina Korzhanenko takes gold with a put of 20.64m.

Vita Pavlysh of Ukraine picks up silver with 20.02m with another Russian Svetlana Krivelyova collecting bronze for her effort of 19.56m.

Women's heptathlon
Swedish teenager Carolina Kluft takes the gold medal in style, winning the last event, the 800m, and setting a new world junior record of 6,542 points.

Veteran Sabrine Braun of Germany had earlier had earlier headed the rankings in both the long jump and the high jump to move up into the silver position but the 37-year-old could not overhaul Kluft.

Men's 4x400m relay
Britain's quartet reach the final in comfortable fashion, despite resting their best runner, Daniel Caines.

Matt Elias brings the baton home to win their semi-final in 3:02.97, the fastest time of either semi-final.

Women's 5,000m
Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan is pipped right on the line by Spain's Marta Dominguez.

A slowly-run race meant that a group of eight were all bunched together with 600m to go.

O'Sullivan hit the front coming into the final straight and looks to have retained her title but the Spaniard sneaks up to snatch gold on the line in 15:14.76.

Men's 110m hurdles
Britain's Colin Jackson takes gold in a time of 13.11 seconds.

The Welshman gets a good start and holds off the challenge of Latvia's Stanislavs Olijars with Poland's Artur Kohutek taking bronze.

Women's triple jump
Ashia Hansen finally overhauls Finland's Heli Koivula with her final jump of 15.00m.

The Finn had led the event since the first round with a personal best of 14.83m but Hansen keeps her nerve and finally nails a winning jump at her sixth and final attempt.

Men's 3,000m steeplechase
Spain's Antonio Jiminez wins the gold medal in a thrilling finish.

Dutchman Simon Vroemen attacks on the home straight but stutters over the final hurdle and is just pipped on the line by Jiminez who has sneaked up on his inside.

Another Spaniard Luis Martin takes the bronze.

Men's 800m
Britain's James McIlroy fails to qualify for the final, coming fifth in his semi-final, which is won by Germany's Nils Schumann.

Wilson Kipketer of Denmark is the fastest qualifier in 1:46.45.

Men's 4x100m relay
The British quartet of Christian Malcolm, Darren Campbell, Marlon Devonish and Dwain Chambers ease through into the final with the minimum of fuss, winning their heat in 38.55.

Women's 4x100m relay
Great Britain do not qualify for the final after a poor baton change between the second and third legs Shani Anderson and Amanda Forrester means they only finish sixth.

Germany and France are the fastest among the qualifiers for the final.

Women's marathon
Italian Maria Guida wins in a new championship record time of two hours, 26 minutes and five seconds.

The 36-year-old, Italy's first gold medallist of the championships, comes home ahead of Germany's Luminita Zaituc with another host nation athlete Sonja Oberem winning bronze.
