Day four: European Athletics

Steve Backley delights the British fans by taking gold in the javelin, his fourth European title.

Greece's Olympic champion Konstantinos Kenteris roars to victory in the 200m with a new Championship record of 19.85 seconds, with Britain's Marlon Devonish taking bronze.

Chris Rawlinson fails in his bid to add European gold to his Commonwealth title as a knee injury wrecks his chances in the 400m hurdles, which is won by Stephane Diagana.

And in the women's 200m, Muriel Hurtis justifies her status as pre-race favourite by taking gold but she is run close by Belgium's Kim Gevaert.

Men's javelin

Steve Backley captures his fourth consecutive European gold as he produces a superb throw of 88.54m in the fifth round.

Sergey Makarov piles the pressure on with his first-round effort of 88.05m but Backley responds brilliantly.

Germany's Boris Henry takes the bronze.

Men's 200m

Olympic champion Konstantinos Kenteris destroys the field and sets a new Championship record of 19.85 seconds.

Portugal's Francis Obikwelu takes silver with Britain's Marlon Devonish finishing third, just ahead of compatriot Christian Malcom.

Women's 100m hurdles

Glory Alozie of Spain makes up for disappointment in the 100m, where she finished fourth, by taking gold.

Her raw speed tells the difference as she finishes comfortably ahead of second-placed Ukrainian Olena Krasovska and bronze-medallist Yana Kasova of Bulgaria.

Women's 200m

Muriel Hurtis of France powers to victory in a thrilling race as Belgium's Kim Gevaert pressures her all the way.

After a poor start, Hurtis takes the lead off the bend and finishes in a time of 22.43 seconds, with Geveart close behind.

Manuela Levorato takes the bronze.

Stephane Diagana
Diagana put his injury problems behind him

France's Stephane Diagana wins European gold at the fourth attempt, but there is disappointment for Commonwealth champion Chris Rawlinson who pulls up injured after three hurdles.

Diagana, whose career has been dogged by injury, sets the fastest time in the world this year of 47.58 seconds and is followed home by Czech Jiri Muzik and defending champion Pavel Januszewski of Poland.

Women's hammer

Russia's Olga Kuzenkova leads from the opening round and clinches Friday's first gold with a throw of 72.94 metres.

Kamila Skolimowska of Poland takes the silver with 72.46m and France's Manuela Montebrun wins bronze on 72.04m.

Women's 1500m

Kelly Holmes makes a surprising exit after coming fourth in her heat and failing to qualify as a fastest loser.

The Briton is off the pace on the final lap and even a desperate sprint only secures a time of 4:08.11, which is bettered by three athletes in the third and final heat.

Great Britain will have no representatives in the final as Helen Pattinson and Hayley Tullett also fail to qualify, but there are no problems for Romanian favourite Gabriela Szabo.

Men's 110m hurdles

Colin Jackson eases through the first heat of the 110m hurdles in a time of 13.41secs, finishing well ahead of Germany's Florian Schwarthoff.

Latvia's Stanislavs Olijars looks the best of the rest with a time of 13.50 secs, beating Tony Jarrett into second place in heat four.

Heptathlon

Sweden's Carolina Kluft leads going into the second day of the heptathlon, after winning her 200m heat in 23.71 seconds.

She has compiled 3915 points narrowly ahead of Belarus's Natalya Sazanovich with 3868 and Lithuania's Austra Skujyte on 3807.

Skuiyte earlier wins the shot putt with a superb effort of 16.72m.
