Herefordshire's Sarah Waldron believes her running at university in New Mexico is good preparation for the European Cross Under-23 Country Championships.
The 22-year-old will compete at the event in Portugal on Sunday.
"It's going to be a bit warmer than here so that is something I have been used to over the last few months," she told BBC Hereford and Worcester.
"The course is similar to those we have raced on in New Mexico so that is going to give me an added advantage."
She added: "I know it is going be run over five loops - hopefully that will also play to our advantage as there are small courses in the States as well."
Waldron, who is studying for a degree in sports science at the University of New Mexico, flew back to the United Kingdom to take part in the trials for this weekend's event.
"Flying back from the US wasn't the best preparation for the trial but I was very set on getting into the team," she said.
"I tried to keep really positive particularly on the plane and then prior to the race when I got back."
The 22-year-old from Puddleston near Leominster was selected as a non-travelling reserve for previous European Championships and is now determined to make the most of her chance.
"Great Britain have got a really good chance of medalling. Last year they were first so we hope we can do another good job," she said.
"In the States it is a very team-orientated sport and that is something that is going to help me as I am used to being part of a team and travelling with a team.
"I really hope I can do well as an individual as well because it has been such a big aim for such a long time and I really want to make the most of my chance to shine."
