Guernsey athletes vying for Island Games places

Ingrouille hopes for progress in the throwing events

Fifty members of Guernsey Athletics Club members are vying for 26 potential places at the 2011 Island Games.

The club has set up a programme of races and training events to prepare them for the Games next June.

Endurance Officer Paul Ingrouille said the team had progressed in terms of track events in the last 10 years.

He added: "Where we haven't competed so strongly is in the throws, but next year we will have a couple of throwers up for medals."

The club's development officer Dale Garland said some of the younger athletes may consider changing their training to another event.

"Some of the girls may step up from 200 to 400 metres in order to get into the team. Some of the guys may switch around a bit," he said.

"We don't want people switching just to get into one games, but, people will want to compete and there will be an element of picking the event they can compete best at at this games."
