Sayers' last competitive outing was at the UK Championships in June |
Cambridge javelin thrower Goldie Sayers has no regrets about pulling out of October's Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The British number one, 28, fractured her hip in the process of winning her eighth consecutive UK Championship crown at Birmingham in June. She told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I could quite easily go there and be very average, but it's not something I want to do at a major championships. "Especially when you're representing your country." Sayers has been replaced by 18-year-old Izzy Jeffs in the England squad, giving the British record holder time to make sure she returns fighting fit. She added: "In some ways it could have been a blessing in disguise. "I've ironed out some things I probably wouldn't have had time to do before winter training starts. | I remember Athens quite vividly and then being in the Bird Nest Stadium two years ago seems like a year ago rather than two years |
"But obviously when the Commonwealths start I'll be quite frustrated." The former Peterborough Athletics Club competitor, who reckons she is at 80% in her battle for fitness, will be pulling out all the stops to feature in her third Olympics when they come to London in two years time. "I'm never unmotivated but having 2012 around the corner is a huge pull," she said. "I remember Athens quite vividly and then being in the Bird Nest Stadium [in Beijing] seems like a year ago rather than two years. "2011 will be critical in how you plan for the following year, so having a successful 2011 is crucial for you preparation for 2012."
