More than 150 competitors took part in the marathon |
Guernsey-born runner Chris Carre was the first man home in the 2010 Guernsey Marathon on Sunday. Carre sat in third place for most of the race before taking the lead two miles out to finish in a personal best of two hours 41 minutes and 29 seconds. More than 150 competitors ran the 26 miles and 385 yards course starting and finishing at Footes Lane. "I could see I was catching him [second-placed Garry Payne] and he was slowing down," Carre said. "My legs had pretty much had it as well but it was a case of just trying to hold on and see who had the willpower to keep going really." Payne, from George Eliot Striders in Nuneaton, finished in a time of 2:44: 13 ahead of Portugal's Jose Monteiro in third. "I never really had a bad spell until the last two miles and I was in the lead and I thought 'I doubt they'll catch me now'," Payne said. Sark's Bronwyn McNeill-Rogers was the first woman across the line |
"Then all of a sudden someone said he was only 200 yards away and it hit me like a rock. I knew I had nothing left - I just tried to get home in one piece." The first woman home was Bronwyn McNeill-Rogers from Sark in 3:09:30. The sole wheelchair athlete, Aindre Rees-Sherrin finished in a time of 3:41:15.
