Mageean sets huge PB in Germany

Mageean competes in the World Youths in Italy next month

Ciara Mageean's huge 1500 metres personal best in Germany overshadowed Saturday's action at the NI & Ulster Senior Championship at Antrim.

Mageean clocked 4:18.28, cutting nearly three seconds off her PB, as she finished first at the junior international event in Mannheim.

Back at Antrim, Jason Smyth won the 100m title with a slick 10.63 clocking.

Fifteen-year-old Adam Ingram won the men's 800m title in impressive fashion in 1:53.90.

The talented Ingram has already been selected on the Irish team for the European Youth Olympics in Finland next month.

Mageean, meanwhile, looks right on course for an impressive performance over 800m at the World Youth Games in Italy in three weeks time and she will also be in action in Finland later in the month.

The Portaferry girl recently set a new Irish junior 800m record with a 2:05 clocking which cut more than a second off the previous mark held by the legendary Sonia O'Sullivan.

Mageean's previous outdoor best was a 4:22.20 set last year, although she had clocked 4:20.88 when successfully defending her national indoor title in February.

Stephen Scullion claimed a 1500m/5000m double at the Antrim Forum.

Scullion held off the Eamon Christie-coached James O'Hare to win the metric mile title in 3:51.49, with O'Hare narrowly missing out on a European Junior Championship qualifying mark.

Joanne Patterson cut .44secs off her previous PB to win the 400m title in 55.00.

Patterson is hoping to achieve the European Under-23 Championship standard of 54.20 in the coming weeks.

With Amy Foster an absentee, Anna Boyle regained the women's 100m title although the Ballymena & Antrim athlete had to be content with a relatively pedestrian time of 12.04.

Mary Devlin clinched a competitive long jump event by holding off Joanna Mills to win with a leap of 5.72m.
