 Mageean won the Irish Senior Indoor 1500m title in January |
Portaferry youngster Ciara Mageean will begin her challenge at the World Junior Championships in Poland on Friday. 1500 metre hopeful Mageean is among four Northern Ireland-based athletes selected for the 22-strong Ireland team that will compete in Bydgoszcz. Lagan Valley duo Jason Harvey and Curtis Woods will run the 4x400m relay while North Down's Hannah Lewis has been selected for the 4x100m relay. Mageean won the the Irish Senior Indoor 1500m title in January. That victory made earned the 15-year-old headlines throughout Ireland and she has built on that success this summer by setting a personal best of 4:22.29 when finishing second in the recent high-class international junior meeting in Mannheim. Sarah Treacy will join Mageean in the 1500m heats on Friday morning. Hannah Lewis will compete in the 4x100m heats on Friday while Lagan Valley duo Harvey and Woods will be in action in the 4x400m qualifiers on Saturday. Seven Irish athletes will be in action on Tuesday's opening day of the championships.
Shot putters Colin Quirke and Barry Pender have an early start as they attempt to qualify for the evening final while Tara Jameson will be involved in the 3000m steeplechase first round in the morning. Niamh Whelan and Joan Healy both compete in the 100m heats while high jumper Pamela Hughes and 800m hopeful Ciara Everard will also be in action. The 12th World Junior Championships will continue through to Sunday.
