Island men in fight for survival

Athletics

The Channel Islands Men's Athletics team face a tough challenge to stay in the National League Division Three after coming last in Leeds on Saturday.

Hampered by the loss of Tom Druce, Steve Dawes and Michael Batiste, they are now in a three-way tie at the bottom with two meetings left to go.

In Coventry on Sunday the women had more success as Sophie Twinam, 18, set a record in the 400m hurdles

Unlike the men their place in the league looks secure for next season.

It is the first season the Channel Islands teams have competed in national leagues.

CI coach Andrew Winnie warned this competition would be a significant step up in class and this weekend has shown the men how tough it is.
