GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES

By Sophie Brown

Third set:

Murray 6-2 Sluiter
Murray reaches for a winning volley to give himself match point. Murray urges the crowd to get behind him as the Dutch seem to be making more noise despite being outnumbered and despite their man being on the brink of defeat. Murray wastes three match points and has to save a break point before he finally clinches victory when Sluiter goes long.

Murray 5-2 Sluiter
A lucky net cord followed by an excellent backhand return give Murray two break points. He wastes the first one with an extravagant volley but earns the break when Sluiter nets.

Murray 4-2 Sluiter
Murray lets slip a 40-0 lead and ends up having to scrap quite hard to hold. Another ace seals the game.

Murray 3-2 Sluiter
Murray may have this match more-or-less in the bag but there's no easing up as far as his competitive desire is concerned. He's furious with himself at missing a backhand and mutters angrily to himself as Sluiter holds serve.

Murray 3-1 Sluiter
Murray takes his foot off the pedal and has to save four break points but finally clinches the game with an emphatic ace.

Murray 2-1 Sluiter
Murray has several chances to break and finally closes out the game as Sluiter finally seems ground down.

Murray 1-1 Sluiter
Sluiter feels he is not getting a fair deal on the line-calling. Murray runs round his forehand to crash a forehand down the line for his first break point in the third set.

Murray 1-1 Sluiter
A quick service game for Murray.

Murray 0-1 Sluiter
Sluiter is hanging in, holding serve against Murray, who is ranked 129 places above the Dutchman.

"I think it's going to be comfortable for Andy in the next set if he can play like he did in those last two games."
GB Davis Cup player Greg Rusedski

Second set:

Murray 7-5 Sluiter
The tension has broken as Murray races to 40-0 up. The first set point goes begging but Sluiter then nets a backhand to give Murray a two-set lead. Sluiter has lost his last six Davis Cup rubbers - surely that's about to become seven.

Murray 6-5 Sluiter
A double fault from Sluiter at 15-30 gives Murray two break points. The Scottish teenager then manages to flick a ball almost from behind him to pass Sluiter and earn the break. His mum Judy is cheering wildly in the crowd.

Murray 5-5 Sluiter
Another edgy game and the tension grows when the umpire rules in favour of Murray at deuce, declaring his serve to be an ace. Sluiter is not happy but Murray doesn't care, rubbing salt into the wound by clinching the game with another ace.

"The neutral observer must be delighted because Andy Murray is in a match now."
BBC summariser Andrew Castle

Murray 4-5 Sluiter
Murray fights back from 40-15 down to deuce. The ensuing tense rally ends with a superb Murray forehand drive that clips the line. Sluiter saves it but there is controversy as he is foot-faulted on a second serve to give Murray another break point. The Dutchman seems fired up by the decision and he goes on to hold.

Murray 4-4 Sluiter
A much more comfortable service game for Murray to turn the pressure straight back onto Sluiter.

Murray 3-4 Sluiter
Murray is getting a bit frustrated at not being able to crack Sluiter. He lashes wildly at a forehand to allow the Dutchman to hold.

Murray 3-3 Sluiter
All of a sudden there's a momentum swing as Sluiter goes 0-30 up on Murray's serve. A whipped cross-court forehand by the Dutchman and Murray is facing two break points. Murray has to run around the court to save the first and Sluiter dumps the second tamely into the net. Murray goes on to hold.

Murray 2-3 Sluiter
A Sluiter serve goes through the top of the net but the French umpire doesn't notice and calls a let. Murray and his captain John Lloyd query the call but it doesn't change anything. It's a closely contested game and Murray finally carves out a break point with a backhand down the line. Sluiter doggedly saves it and another break point. Murray seems like he is trying to nail a break - maybe he is trying too hard as Sluiter finally manages to hold.

Murray 2-2 Sluiter
Murray fires down a couple more aces and rounds off another straightforward with a slam-dunk smash that Pete Sampras himself would have been proud of.

Murray 1-2 Sluiter
Sluiter is not giving in - neither are the Dutch fans, who greet his service hold with ecstatic celebrations.

Murray 1-1 Sluiter
A couple of close calls cause Murray to glare in the direction of the umpire and from 40-0 up, he is pulled back to 40-30. But the 19-year-old seems to be playing well within himself and goes on to hold comfortably.

Murray 0-1 Sluiter
Despite another double fault and unlike in the first set, Sluiter holds his opening serve.

First set:

Murray 6-3 Sluiter
Some heavy serving puts Murray 40-15 and two set points up. He wastes the first with a double fault but makes amends with the second, banging down an ace to take the first set.

Murray 5-3 Sluiter
Sluiter's first double fault of the match is followed by an ace as the 28-year-old Dutchman forces Murray to serve for the first set.

Murray 5-2 Sluiter
Murray shows off his repertoire of shots as he holds to 15 - he volleys, dropshots, smashes and the game is won.

Murray 4-2 Sluiter
Sluiter is settling into the match now and holds serve.

"Murray has got such ability on that backhand."
BBC summariser Andrew Castle

Murray 4-1 Sluiter
The best rally of the match so far ends with Sluiter lobbing and smashing his way to a break point. But the Dutchman squanders his chance to break, trying to go down the line when cross-court was the better option - and a grateful Murray volleys himself back to deuce. Some lovely backhands from the Scot enable him to hold.

Murray 3-1 Sluiter
Sluiter has an awkward style with a jerky serve and an ugly double-handed forehand and backhand. But it's effective - he races through his service game without dropping a point. The Dutch fans start singing in celebration at their man's first game on the board.

Murray 3-0 Sluiter
Murray is taken to deuce but just seems to step up his game to avoid any danger. Both players are wearing their usual kits - with the names of their countries written across their backs in a concession to the national team format of the Davis Cup. Murray has a blue baseball cap on - after all, serving into the sun inside the NEC can get a bit awkward...

Murray 2-0 Sluiter
The perfect start for Great Britain as Murray gets a early break after Sluiter volleys wide after a couple of approach shots.

Murray 1-0 Sluiter
Good opening service game from Murray, who finishes it off with an ace. The one point Sluiter wins gets a huge reception from the Dutch fans - they are clearly not going to be out-shouted.

1211 BST: All eyes are on Andy Murray's groin (I can explain) as the players knock up - has his injury healed?

1205 BST: Andy Murray and Raemon Sluiter come back onto the court along with the team captains John Lloyd and Jan Siemerink. There's a healthy contingent of orange-shirted Dutch fans but home fans are in the majority.

1158 BST: Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Two Tribes is now being played along with a glitzy big-screen slideshow. The teams troop off the court. Lots of the crowd appear a bit bemused by it all - they thought they were coming to watch some tennis.

1150 BST: The teams come out to techno music and are introduced to the Duchess of Gloucester. The national anthems are played. Tim Henman is the only one of the British squad to sing along. Andy Murray does his best Gary Neville impression and glares at his feet.

1145 BST: The music's gone a bit more contemporary now and then it's time for the presentation ceremony.

1140 BST: The warm-up man has done his stuff with the crowd and the lights go down at the NEC. Some operatic music is blared out across the arena - it's that one that's on all the adverts.
