Venus Williams

Warsaw Cup

Venus Williams overcame windy conditions to reach the quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Czech qualifier Zuzana Ondraskova.

Ondraskova broke Williams once in each set and saved three match points in the final game, but the world number 118 could not contain the top seed.

"It was quite windy and I had to hit a lot of balls," said Williams, who had a first-round bye.

"I hadn't seen her before, so I knew I really had to be on my toes because a lot of the girls I play feel that on clay this is the chance to get me.

Daniela Hantuchova

"They have nothing to lose so they go for everything. So I'm very serious about garnering every point and holding my serve."

Second seed Amelie Mauresmo was taken to three sets by Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic before booking her place in the last eight with a 2-6 6-2 6-0 win.

But third-seeded Daniela Hantuchova suffered a shock 6-2 6-4 defeat at the hands of Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga.

"I don't usually find excuses when I lose, but I really couldn't have done much today," said Hantuchova.

"The wind was so strong. I was trying to be aggressive but it didn't pay off. Basically she was putting the ball back in the court and I was making too many mistakes."

Sixth seed Eleni Daniilidou of Greece was thrashed 6-1 6-1 by Italy's Francesca Schiavone.

Magui Serna of Spain earned her 14th straight victory with a 4-6 6-1 6-2 defeat of Czech qualifier Sandra Kleinova.

And Kleinova's compatriot Denisa Chladkova beat Arantxa Parra of Spain 6-1 7-5.

Croatian Bol Ladies Open

Top seed Patty Schnyder suffered a second-round exit as she was beaten 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 by Spain's Gala Leon Garcia.

And third-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva survived a major scare as she won a third-set tiebreak 8-6 to see off Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 2-6 6-3 7-6.

Sixth-ranked Slovak Henrieta Nagyova was another seed to fall, losing 2-6 6-0 6-4 to Spain's Maria Sanchez Lorenzo.

American Samantha Reeves went through with a 6-1 4-6 6-3 victory over Patricia Wartusch of Austria, and Spain's Conchita Martinez Granados beat Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus 6-4 6-1.
