Newcastle Falcons have appointed lock forward James Hudson as captain for the new season.

The 28-year-old played all Newcastle's Premiership games last season - his first at Kingston Park after joining from London Irish.

Hudson takes over the role from New Zealand prop Carl Hayman who has joined French club Toulon.

Falcons head coach Alan Tait said: "James has got everything you would want for the role."

Tait added: "He has embraced the changes we are making at the club and has really grown as a leader during his time with us."

Hudson, who is currently in the United States with England Saxons, told the club's website: "It's a fantastic honour to be asked to captain the club.

"Carl Hayman did a great job last season so I know I have big shoes to fill as skipper, but I can't wait to get my teeth into it.

"I know that with the attitude the boys have they will be right behind me and supporting me all the way in the role, and from the fans' point of view everyone here is absolutely committed to delivering success out on the field this season."
