The New Jersey Devils beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 6-3 in the Stanley Cup to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. Anaheim had fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the series but must now win at home on Saturday to force a deciding game.
After 12 goals in the opening four games, there were nine in game five which was a free-flowing and open affair.
Jamie Langenbrunner scored twice for New Jersey, who are now just one win away from their third championship.
Brian Gionta chipped in a goal and two assists to help New Jersey improve to 11-1 at home in the play-offs.
The Devils had several freak goals with one deflecting off the stick off Anaheim's Mike Leclerc while one went in off the skate of New Jersey winger Jay Pandolfo and two others resulted from favourable bounces.
Petr Sykora scored after just 43 seconds for the Ducks but they ended up conceding six themselves, the first time in the play-offs that Jean-Sebastien Gigurre has conceded more than three.
Pandolfo's goal came at 9:02 of the second period when the puck found the net via his right skate after Gionta's shot was inititally saved by Giguere.
The referee at first ruled the goal out but changed his mind after seeing a video replay.
Langenbrunner struck twice in the third period and now leads the league with a career-high 11 goals.
Pascal Rheaume and Patrik Elias were the other New Jersey scorers while Steve Rucchin and Samuel Pahlsson got the Ducks' second and third goals.
Victory has gone to the home team in each of the first five games in the series with game six taking place in Anaheim on Saturday.
