Anaheim have won their first game in the Stanley Cup |
The Anaheim Mighty Ducks stayed in the hunt for the Stanley Cup by defeating the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in game three on Sunday. Ruslan Salei grabbed a goal in over-time to give the Ducks a valuable first win in the seven-game series, which lies at 2-1 in the Devils favour.
An attacking Anaheim side had twice taken the lead on home soil at the Pond only to see New Jersey claw back into the game.
But Salei had the final word in the sixth minute of extra time as his wrist shot zipped past Devils' goalkeeper Martin Brodeur to hand Anaheim the win.
"In that situation, when you win the draw, you have to shoot," Salei said.
"It's really important. Down two games coming home, we need to get one game.
It hasn't hit me yet, so far that is the biggest goal I have scored |
"We need to get momentum going, that was huge for us. Marc Chouinard put the Ducks into the lead in the second period when his shot ricocheted past a stranded Brodeur.
But Patrik Elias answered for New Jersey when he picked up Jamie Langenbrunner's pass and rifled it past Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
Just 45 seconds later the Ducks re-took the lead when Brodeur, who had completed six post-season shut-outs, deflected the puck into his own net.
Scott Gomez covered his goalkeeper's blushes forcing overtime with the third period's only goal.
Despite their triumph Anaheim still have it all to do if they are to claim their first-ever Stanley Cup - only three teams have won the trophy after dropping the first two games.
