Brodeur snuffed out Anaheim's threat |
The New Jersey Devils rolled over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 3-0 on Thursday to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Devils put on a devastating defensive display, restricting Anaheim to just 16 goal attempts at the Continental Airlines Centre.
Martin Brodeur was a man mountain in the New Jersey goal and completed his sixth shutout of the post-season.
Patrik Elias and Scott Gomez slotted home a goal apiece in the second period to put the Devils on top before Jeff Friesen added the third.
Elias spied the puck lying unattended on the ice after it had ricocheted off one of his team-mates and he slotted it past Ducks' Jean-Sebastien Gigueure to put the Devils in front.

Gomez then knocked Oleg Trevdovsky's slapshot from just inside the blue line past Giguere. Anaheim looked far brighter than in the first game of the series and played with much more determination and energy.
But they could not find a way past a stifling New Jersey defence and when they did the Mighty Ducks were woefully off target. Jeff Friesen put the match beyond Anaheim in the third period when he pushed a low backhand shot into the back of the net.
The best-of-seven contest now moves to the West coast for games three and four where Anaheim will be hoping a home crowd in California can inspire them to score their first goal of the finals.
