Papineau wins Gold Cup
Frankie Dettori celebrates victory on Papineau at Ascot
Dettori won his fourth Gold Cup
Frankie Dettori rode second favourite Papineau to victory in the Gold Cup at Ascot on Ladies' Day.

Dettori, a winner on Punctilious in the previous race, claimed his fourth win of the meeting for the Godolphin stable on the 5-1 shot.

Westerner, ridden by French jockey Gerald Mosse, came second with 28-1 shot Darasim finishing third.

Royal Rebel, winner in 2001 and 2002, came in fourth while last year's winner Mr Dinos could only manage sixth.

Dettori was understandably delighted at claiming his fourth Gold Cup victory.

He is so big but he doesn't mind fast ground
Frankie Dettori on Papineau
"He is a fantastic horse," Dettori said. "He has so much class and everything fell right.

"I got on the tail of Westerner and followed him but Papineau has a tremendous turn of foot.

"When I asked him he picked up straightaway - he is real class.

"We were worried he might have some problems because he is so big but he doesn't mind fast ground."

Japanese horse Ingrandire led for most of the race, with Mr Dinos well placed alongside with half a mile to go.

But Westerner, with Papineau close behind, moved clear with two furlongs remaining before Dettori's mount eased ahead on the inside to win by a length-and-a-half.

Darasim finished strongly but was two-and-a-half lengths back in third.

One of Godolphin's other horses, Highest, damaged his front legs but was not thought to be seriously hurt.
