Basketball positions: centre

The centre is likely to be the tallest player on the court - a typical centre in America's NBA league is 6ft 10ins or taller.

Their job is focused on both ends of the court, involving a mixture of defensive and offensive duties.

Centres will look to use their bulk to score from close to the basket, as well as blocking shots and dealing with rebounds.

They will often be called the "big man" or "post player".

A centre who possesses size along with plenty of athleticism and skill is a real asset for any team.

Centres are the players who tip-off at the start of a game.
