The Detroit Lions selected former Georgia University passer Matthew Stafford as the first pick of this year's draft and he immediately signed a deal worth $78m (£53m) - with $41.7m (£28.4m) of it guaranteed.
Despite being a relatively small for a quarterback at six foot two inches, Stafford is equipped with incredible throwing power which led him to throw for 3,459 yards and 25 touchdowns in his final year in Georgia.
Stafford has a big job on his hands if he is to turnaround a team that went failed to win a game last season and has not won a championship for 50 years.
Upon signing, Stafford said: "I'm extremely excited. This is a dream come true for me and my family. I'm excited to get to Detroit and start things going."
