Derry's Gerard O'Kane holds on to the ball as Tyrone's Sean Cavanagh moves in |
All-Ireland champions Tyrone outclassed a disappointing Derry side at Casement Park to book their place in the 19 July Ulster football final. Four points from Tommy McGuigan helped Tyrone establish an eight points to five lead by half-time. Derry managed just two points from Eoin Bradley in the second half as Mickey Harte's team pulled away to secure a meeting with Antrim or Cavan at Clones. Kevin McGuckin was shown a straight red card after an off-the-ball clash. He was involved in one of a number of ill-tempered exchanges as the game threatened to boil over in the latter stages. The Derry fans among the 24,000 crowd will be disappointed their side never really threatened an upset against the dominant Red Hands. Tyrone missed a couple of frees early on before Barry McGoldrick converted the opening score for Derry. It was to be the only brief spell in which the Oak Leaf county had their noses in front. Tommy McGuigan sent over two frees before capping a sweeping Tyrone attack with the first point from play in the 12th minute. Paddy Bradley replied with a free for Derry but McGuigan scored another free for Tyrone whose lead was stretched to four by a couple of well-taken points from play by Martin Penrose. It looked like a lethargic Derry were in danger of being cast as also-rans against Mickey Harte's All-Ireland champions. But they hit back with an Eoin Bradley free and followed that with their first point from play through substitute Seamus Bradley in the 28th minute. Stephen O'Neill fisted over another point for Tyrone who were much more impressive coming forward. Eoin Bradley for Derry and Tyrone's Kevin Hughes added points from play to leave the Red Hands three points ahead at half-time. The second half failed to yield a score for 14 minutes but then Tyrone found a bit of form and had their place in the decider secured long before the final whistle. Skipper Brian Dooher, on as a substitute, got things going with a score from play and more points followed from Davy Harte, Penrose, Sean Cavanagh, Hughes, Sean O'Neill and Brian McGuigan. In the end it was not really a contest as Tyrone's obvious superiority was reflected in the final scoreline. Antrim or Cavan await, but Harte's men men will be overwhelming favourites whoever they play.
