Player swing analysis

Padraig Harrington's swing analysed

Padraig Harrington's swing analysed
Ken Brown
BBC golf commentator

Padraig Harrington is a great example of a worker.

He has now got a very conventional swing but he did not start out on Tour like that.

He has grafted extremely hard to get the basics absolutely right and can now boast to be one of the top ten players in the world - and he's earned it.

It just shows that with hard work and application you can really improve your technique.

SET-UP

All good swings start with a good set-up

All good swings start with a good set-up and good posture.

It's something anybody can work on - there's no great mystery. If you get it right it makes hitting a good shot so much easier.

If you haven't, you're always going to have to make some kind of compensation in your swing on the way to hitting the ball.

Padraig Harrington's facts
Born: 31 August 1971, Dublin, Republic of Ireland
Turned pro: 1995
Career: Has finished second more than anybody on the European Tour
Hobbies: He is a qualified accountant and never drinks alcohol

Padraig's set-up is a good one to copy. His feet are shoulder width apart. He has the ball backward of middle for this shot, a 7-iron.

And you can see how his left arm is virtually a continuation of the club.

He keeps it nice and straight so they form one long line. This is the spoke of the wheel he will turn.

It is noticeable how straight Padraig keeps it on his backswing too, which keeps the arc really wide.

AT THE TOP

Padraig makes a lot of sideways movement

His left arm is still pretty straight, and he's looking right down over his left shoulder at the ball.

Unlike Woods, Padraig makes quite a lot of sideways movement with his hips.

You can see he's shifted to his right as he gets set to rip into the ball.

And also unlike Tiger, his right foot stays on the ground through the swing and at impact.

FOLLOW THROUGH

It's all about the arch in the back

You can see the lateral hip movement clearly here at impact.

All the weight is on the front foot and powering into the ball.

His left arm and the club are still pretty much on the same axis they were when he addressed the ball.

Padraig's secret is simplicity. As he follows through he has quite a pronounced arch in his back.
