The Englishman makes his Ryder Cup debut after winning Europe's Order of Merit last year following top-12 finishes in all of the four majors.

Rose has since struggled to hit quite the same heights and has slipped slowly down the Ryder Cup rankings, giving himself a nervous last few weeks.

He only sealed his spot after tieing for fifth place at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, the last qualifying event. He also tied second at the Memorial Tournament on the PGA Tour in June, and finished ninth in the USPGA in August.

Rose is still remembered for his fourth place as a 17-year-old amateur at the 1998 Open, and for his 21 straight missed cuts after turning pro the next day.

But as one of Europe's current crop of "most likely" next major winners he is at a crossroads in his career and needs to deliver a major to fulfil his early promise.

Rose is likely to be paired with close pal Ian Poulter at Valhalla.
