The colourful Spaniard, with his curly ginger pony tail, rotund belly and penchant for cigars, makes his third appearance and third in America.
Jimenez, nicknamed "The Mechanic" for his love of cars, notably his Ferrari, is one of the most popular characters on tour with a ready wit and cheerful demeanour.
When asked what his requirements were for the 2004 European team room at Oakland Hills, he replied: "Rioja wine, an espresso machine and cigars."
But his laid-back image belies a gritty competitor who has claimed more of his 15 tournament victories worldwide since turning 40 than before.
Jimenez, who was an assistant to captain Seve Ballesteros in Spain in 1997, has won twice this season, in Hong Kong last November and then again in the PGA Championship at Wentworth in May, the biggest title of his career.
After his play-off victory over Oliver Wilson, Jimenez said: "I told him (Faldo) the other day, 'I hope I can be in your team' and he said, 'I hope so too'.
"I can play with anyone, I'm very easy to team up with any other player. I'm also calm and experienced.
"One thing I guarantee, I am going to give 120% if I make the team."
At the Open at Royal Birkdale in July, Faldo crept up behind the practising Jimenez on the range. On seeing his captain, the Spaniard snapped to attention and saluted. Faldo saluted back and the pair chatted like trusted comrades ahead of battle.
His Ryder Cup record - and his lack of caps despite a 20-year career - is surprising. He has won just twice in nine matches, including defeats in both his singles.
But like a fine wine, Jimenez just seems to get better with age.
