Furyk lands Buick win
Jim Furyk
Furyk won the US Open in June

US Open winner Jim Furyk held off a late charge from defending champion Tiger Woods to clinch the Buick Open in Michigan on Sunday.

Furyk fired a closing 68 to finish on 21 under and win by two shots from Woods (66), Australia's Geoff Ogilvy (65), Briny Baird (66) and Chris DiMarco (67).

It was the 33-year-old's second win of 2003 and ninth PGA Tour career win.

Another stroke further back were Paul Goydos and Neal Lancaster, while Andrew Magee, Fiji's Vijay Singh, Australia's Paul Gow and Kenny Perry completed the top 10.

"Overall, unbelievable the way I scored," said Furyk, who leaked just two bogeys all week and hit 34 of 36 greens in regulation on the weekend.

"I got the ball in the hole and got the job done, and that's the difference between having a pretty good week and winning a golf tournament. I just scored very, very well this week."

Furyk began the day with a one-stroke lead over Carl Paulson and promptly bagged three birdies in an outward 33.

He dropped a shot with a three-putt at the 11th to narrow his lead to one but made amends with back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14 before parring home.

Woods began his final round in a share of eighth place on 13 under, and despite tripping up with a five at the par-four second, he amassed seven birdies to push Furyk all the way.

Ogilvy, playing with Woods, racked up nine birdies through 16 and needed another at the short 17th to tie Furyk for the lead.

But he left his tee shot short, chipped 14 feet past the hole and missed the par putt.

"It is a lot of fun to be playing with Tiger on a Sunday in front of the big crowd, and actually leading him for most of the day," Ogilvy said. "I just wish it could have ended better."

Paulson, meanwhile, struggled to stay in contention and carded a miserable six-over 78 to plummet to a tie for 38th.
