Steady Lewis grabs lead
JL Lewis
Lewis has not won a title since his 1999 victory at the same event
Former champion JL Lewis shot a second round six-under-par 65 on Friday to jump into a two-shot lead in the John Deere Classic.

The 43-year-old, whose only victory in 14 years on the PGA Tour was his 1999 win at the Illinois event, matched his opening round to be on 12-under.

Overnight co-leader Jonathan Byrd, last season's PGA Rookie of the Year, carded a four-under 67 to lie second while world number four Vijay Singh fired a 68 to be third on 134.

Chris Riley and Paul Stankowski are tied for fourth another stroke back.

German Bernhard Langer also shot a 65 and climbed into a three-way tie for sixth with former British Open champion Justin Leonard and Kevin Sutherland.

Several groups were still on the course when play was suspended for the day on Friday. They will finish their second rounds on Saturday morning after which the cut will be made for the final two rounds.

Lewis go the better of Friday's conditions, with the morning rain clearing later in the day.

"I was lucky. I think the people who teed off in the morning got the bad end of the draw," he said.

Singh said on Thursday he hoped to be aggressive in his second round after closing with an eagle and birdie in the first round, but he said the morning showers "kind of messed everything up."

"It's a hard grind when it's raining. I think everybody feels the same way," said Singh.
