Perry receives his trophy from course designer Jack Nicklaus |
Kenny Perry proved he is on a roll by clinching the Memorial tournament in Ohio by two strokes on Sunday. The 42-year-old's triumph saw him become only the 39th player to notch up back-to-back victories on the PGA tour following his win in last week's Colonial.
Perry, who had led from the second round, saw off Lee Janzen who finished on eleven under.
US Masters champion Mike Weir sneaked up into third place with a birdie at the 18th to card an impressive 65.
Perry seemed oblivious to the gusty conditions at the Muirfield Village course as he raced away with four birdies over the front nine.
He was fortunate that he had already built up a five-stroke lead as he then sloppily settled for five bogeys in the stretch to the clubhouse.
"About 13, it hit me," Perry said. "I just got flat and started stroking it terrible."
"Thank goodness I had a lead and Lee wasn't making anything.
FINAL ROUND SCORES 13 under: Kenny Perry 11 under: Lee Janzen 10 under: Mike Weir (Can) 9 under: Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh (Fiji) |
"But I'm sure glad Jack (Nicklaus) built this golf course because I love it here"
Perry received a check for $900,000 for the second time in a week and that moved him up to a career-best fifth spot on the PGA money list.
After a forgettable third round Tiger Woods had something to smile about as he hit four birdies and an eagle on the back nine to close with a seven-under 65.
The world number one moved up the leaderboard to tie with Fiji's Vijay Singh for fourth spot and will go to the US Open in two weeks in better spirit.
Woods will be keeping more than an eye on Perry at Olympia Fields after admitting that Perry deserved to win the Memorial. "Last week was a joke to shoot that at Colonial," Woods said.
"And to do it here, back-to-back weeks, with the wind blowing as hard as it has, he's put up some pretty good numbers."
Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal led the European contingent, finishing in 10th place after a storming third round.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington shot an even par round of 72 to finish on two under while Lee Westwood was three over and Luke Donald finished three further adrift.
