Ernie Els scorched round the Bay Hill course in a seven-under-par 65 to set the clubhouse lead before a long weather delay brought an early end to day two in Florida.The world number two put a lacklustre first-round 74 behind him to surge to five under, firing seven birdies, including four in a row from the 10th.
But Australian Aaron Baddeley inched to six under through three holes before an electrical storm brought play to a halt.
Only half the field had completed the round before darkness and the others, including world number one Tiger Woods, will resume on Saturday morning.

Woods had a scare before his round when his Swedish girlfriend, Elin Nordegren, collapsed outside the clubhouse.
Woods accompanied the 23-year-old to hospital but returned to the course in time to tee off and reported that she had food poisoning.
Woods reached the seventh in two under to be four under overall before the stoppage.
Alongside Els on five under were Jonathan Kaye and Jeff Maggert, who had both played nine holes.
A stroke behind Els in the clubhouse were Australian Peter Lonard, Swede Niclas Fasth and American Steve Lowery.
Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke moved to two under after a second-round 68.

England's Andrew Sherbourne and Spain's Jesus Maria Arruti share the lead at the Madeira Open after a rain-affected second day.
The pair were tied at five under par when play was suspended for the day.
Arruti, Thursday's leader, had played 12 holes of his round, while Sherbourne had completed six, with 67 other players failing to complete their second rounds.

The Spaniard has made just three cuts in two years, and carded a four over par 76 and then a 75 to leave him seven over par.
The 45-year-old has won more than 80 titles worldwide, including five major championships, but has not tasted victory since 1995 or had a top-10 finish since 1998.
