Davies is back to her best |
Laura Davies continued her strong early-season form by carding a five-under-par 65 in the first round of the Welch's/Fry's Championship in Tucson, Arizona. On a high after a series of good finishes in Australia and New Zealand, the former world number one made her score on the outward nine to finish four shots behind Canadian Lorie Kane.
Kane birdied her final five holes to set the first round pace ahead of fellow Canadian A.J. Eathorne and Tonya Gill.
In the opening event of the delayed US season, Johanna Head also shot 65, while Kathryn Marshall had a 66 to add to the British threat.
Davies said afterwards: "It was a great front nine even if I was a little disappointed that I didn't get a few more under coming home.
"But I'll always take a 65 for the opening round."
Head, who is holding a full LPGA card for the first time, had a flawless round in warm conditions, finishing up with a brace of birdies.
