A spasm almost forced Montgomerie to pull out of the final round of the Deutsche Bank Open on Monday, when he lost to Tiger Woods in a play-off. And he will not risk aggravating the problem before Thursday's opening round at Wentworth as he chases his fourth Volvo PGA victory in five years. Montgomerie, 38, has not won a tournament since the Scandinavian Masters last August. But his second place in Heidelberg earned him 187,000 and lifted him 10 places up the European rankings to sixth. It was the third time in succession he had led a tournament and he held his advantage right up until the 13th hole of the final round. |
