York City have signed Jonathan Smith on a free transfer from Forest Green Rovers and George Purcell from Braintree Town for an undisclosed fee.
Striker Purcell, 22, started his career at Ebbsfleet while midfielder Smith, 23, who has signed a two-year deal, made 106 league appearance for Rovers.
Smith told BBC Radio York: "York are one of the biggest teams in the league.
"It wasn't about the money, it was about trying to get promotion to the Football League and that's my aim."
York City manager Martin Foyle added: "They're two players I've been chasing for a little bit.
"Jonathan, who I actually watched about nine months ago, I thought had the ability to score the goals and I think he's got that ability to go on and do it again.
"George Purcell has come from Braintree. Again, 22 goals in Conference South. A great return.
"I think we needed to have goals from different areas this year because I thought last year it was predominantly Brodie and a little bit of Rankine and Gash. Not enough from set pieces and not enough from open play.
"Again it puts pressure on other players now. Everybody will be looking over their shoulders."
