Keeper Steve Phillips offered permanent deal by Crewe

Crewe have made a significant offer to goalkeeper Steve Phillips in an attempt to sign him on a permanent deal.

The 31-year-old has been on loan with the Alex since 2 November and said he would not be interested in extending his loan when it expires in January.

Manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke: "We've made him the best offer that the club can make."

Any deal would dependant on Phillips negotiating a settlement for the rest of his contract at Bristol Rovers.

Phillips has started seven games for Crewe, keeping one clean sheet, and has played a big part in their unbeaten run, which now stretches to five games.

"I don't think he started off particularly well, but he has played well for a number of games and we'd like to keep him," added Gradi.

"I have criticised him since he's been here and not been prepared to accept second-best, so he knows what he's in for and he accepts that."

If Phillips stays at Crewe, it could lead to the departure of Steve Collis, who has been deemed surplus to requirements by the Alex.

Collis has made just one appearance for the club this season and is out of contract in June.
