John Toshack Wales and Liverpool legend |

As a footballing side I don't think we can begrudge Russia the result. We wanted it bad enough but didn't know how to get it.
Toshack says Earnshaw was not used in his most effective role |
We had three chances - and failed to take each one of them. The Ryan Giggs miss before half-time was the turning point of the game, it was such an important moment psychologically and he had to score from eight yards out.
John Hartson snatched at his chance and had an unhappy evening all round. For me, Viktor Onopko was the man of the match and he handled John very well.
Gary Speed was the one man you wanted in his position to score, he gets there so many times, but when his header went past I knew it wasn't going to be our night.
Despite the chances, we played into Russia's hands with a very narrow attacking approach.
Hartson needs someone alongside him. We keep saying every game how well he has battled up there on his own but he needs a quick player close by.
 | Earnshaw has 19 goals in 19 games and he hasn't got those from wide on the right |
When we were one down - with so much at stake - Robert Earnshaw was needed close to the centre forward where we know he can do damage, not out wide on the right or back on half-way chasing things. He has 19 goals in 19 games and he hasn't got those from wide on the right.
Andy Johnson, Robbie Savage or Gary Speed playing a holding role are not going to get into the box and get you a goal.
We needed to throw something at Onopko and his partner who were doing so well.
There are also major problems in midfield where we lack an old-fashioned number 10 who will get his foot on the ball in the middle of the park, control it and thread passes through.
Our midfield works hard and shields the centre backs, but our tactics are the same in every game, to concede possession then make the opposition work hard.
When we have possession we do not create opportunities in free play, although it should be said that Simon Davies has been badly missed.
 | It hasn't been a marvellous qualifying campaign as people have been saying |
I'm so disappointed for everyone, the fantastic supporters, the fact that Welsh football has lost at least 3.5m by failing to qualify. The disappointment has been intensified by the fact that we had such a marvellous start to the qualifying campaign with 12 points from four games.
Now, though, we've had six competitive games where we've lost four and drawn two.
We've only won one game in the last nine and with those sort of stats you can't expect anything else.
It hasn't been a marvellous qualifying campaign as people have been saying. It was an excellent first four matches, but I didn't enjoy Milan. I didn't enjoy Belgrade.
If we'd got anything in Serbia or Italy we'd have qualified. If we'd got two wins in our final home games against Finland and Serbia we'd have qualified. Now we've failed against Russia and it's the end of the road.
