Alan Hansen's view

Wales suffered a desperately disappointing night - and the brutal truth is they weren't good enough after giving everything in Russia on Saturday.

It possibly took a lot out of them to get the draw in Moscow and in the last half hour, when we were expecting a Welsh surge it was really, really flat.

Wales did not put Russia under pressure and in the end they went out with a whimper.

You have to take your chances and Wales didn't and paid the ultimate price

The Russians were on top, passing and moving and it was too easy, but in the end Wales suffered from the oldest rule in the book.

And it is the one that states if you have chances you have to take them, and Wales didn't.

Ryan Giggs was desperately unlucky to hit a post right on half time, and then Gary Speed missed a header not long after the break when you would have put your life on him hitting the target.

Wales were very comfortable for the first 20 minutes, with John Hartson and Robbie Savage having good chances.

But Wales defended very deep and let the Russians play across them. It was comfortable for them, but when you've got seven, eight or nine behind the ball you have a problem.

This is what happened, and it is particularly a problem when you have got Hartson on his own up front, because he is not going to chase anything over the top.

Savage was also disappointing in the crucial first half.

We've given him plaudits when we have seen him running from box to box, but it must be running with a purpose and he was running without any.

He was getting past the front men, chasing people down and using energy, but he was leaving men people in the middle of the park, so it was all to no effect.

Wales then suffered further when Darren Barnard made an individual error and it cost them.

He should have kicked the ball into touch and I couldn't understand why he was trying to push the Russian player out of the way.

Russia then took advantage of poor defending. Vadim Evseev was not picked up and it was in the back of the net.

It just didn't happen for Wales after that, and with Scotland losing so heavily in Holland, it was a heartbreaking night for the two Euro 2004 hopefuls.
