Paul Jones: Blameless for Russia's goal and had little to do with Russia content to contain for large portions of the game - good save from Bulykin gave Wales vain hope.

Mark Delaney: Reliable display from the Aston Villa defender, but sadly never got the opportunity to add his weight as an attacking force when Wales so desperately needed width.

Darren Barnard: Uncomfortable evening. Booked and carelessly conceded the first half free-kick that led to Russia breaking the deadlock.

Danny Gabbidon: Tough learning experience for the Cardiff City youngster. Showed his promise and naivety in equal measure, but found his carelessness occasionally exposed by the Russians.

Andy Melville: Steady performance in defence, but occasionally troubled by the Russians' sharp passing around the penalty area.

Jason Koumas: Not as influential as in the first leg, but showed more promise when moved to a more central role and unfortunate to be substituted.

Robbie Savage: Disappointing display. Delivered his usual lung-busting performance but the end results were poor. Booking completed a miserable night. Energy but no effect.

Gary Speed: Speed gave it everything, especially in the first half, but missed a headed chance early in the second period that is normally his trademark. Deserved better.

Andy Johnson: Little or no influence on the game, although caught by a bad tackle early on which may have slowed him down. Substituted after 57 minutes.

Ryan Giggs: Wales' biggest hope could not deliver on a desperate night. Never flagged for a minute, but struck the post with a simple chance right on half-time that could have changed everything.

John Hartson: He was his usual robust self, but suffered badly from a dreadful lack of support and service. Also guilty of a bad miss early on when a goal could have set up a glory night.

Robert Earnshaw (replaced ) Andy Johnson: Plenty of endeavour, but it seemed the game had drifted away from Wales by the time he made his entrance.

Nathan Blake (replaced ) Jason Koumas: Hardly had a chance to make an impact. The Millennium Stadium was starting to empty when he came on.
