Hansen's verdict

By Alan Hansen
BBC Sport football expert

England got the three points against Liechtenstein but it was bitty, scrappy and there was no great fluency or rhythm.

They say that the higher the level you go that possession is vitally important and first touch is king and I thought England failed in both categories.

In the second half it was realistic to expect them to get tired and they did and the gaps start to appear more frequently. But to exploit the gaps you have to get it down and play and England never did that.

If England play like that against Turkey on Wednesday they will not win

How many times have we seen Michael Owen and David Beckham get them out of trouble? It's the big two that will score the goals when it really matters.

Overall, I would say the performance was dire and it was not pretty.

As I say there was no fluency or rhythm from England and if they play like that against Turkey on Wednesday they will not win.

It will be different but England will have to play better than they did in this match.

I thought Owen's move came from the best move of the first half. I think we have still to see the best of Michael and he is getting better all the time.

The keeper had no chance with the second which was a trademark Beckham free-kick.

England needed all the confidence in the world going into the Turkey game - I don't think this performance will give them that

If you have a criticism at all they could have had another man in the wall but there was power, bend and swerve from Beckham. It was a magnificent free-kick.

The reaction to that goal from the England bench was more of relief than anything else.

At that stage it looked like England would be in the ascendancy and go on to get four or five but it just didn't happen.

The win was the most important thing but England have not been playing well recently and needed all the confidence in the world going into the Turkey game.

Personally, I don't think this performance will give them that sort of confidence going into that match.
