McStay inspires Scots to victory
Norway 1-2 Scotland World Cup qualifier September 1988
Scotland kicked off their quest for a place at the 1990 World Cup in Italy with a potentially hazardous trip to Oslo; with France, Yugoslavia, and Cyprus also lying in wait in Group Five.
Andy Roxburgh's side got off to the perfect start with Paul McStay firing them into a 14th minute lead.
Unfortunately, the home pressure paid dividends when Jan Fjortoft netted the equaliser on the stroke of half-time.
But Maurice Johnston put the Scots in front with the decisive goal in the 62nd minute, setting the tone for a good campaign.
Scotland's 2-0 win over France at Hampden the following March proved the high point of their efforts.
